THE SEARCH

The Bruce Museum seeks a transformational and charismatic leader to serve as its next Executive Director. Working closely with the Board of Trustees and staff, the Executive Director will promote the Bruce’s goal to be “a center for inspiration and learning, where extraordinary art and science spark conversation, connection and creativity.”

The Bruce Museum is an American Alliance of Museums accredited institution that highlights art, science, and natural history in numerous permanent and changing exhibitions. Ahead of its time for taking this multidisciplinary approach over a century ago, the Bruce is a leader in bringing together art, science, technology, and creativity to generate moments of discovery and dialogue. The Bruce plays an integral role in the cultural life of area residents and attracts approximately 100,000 visitors annually.

In April 2023, the Bruce opened an expanded facility following a transformative $68 million capital campaign. The three-story, 43,000-square-foot addition more than doubles the size of the Museum and includes cutting-edge exhibition galleries and new education and community spaces.

The Bruce is primed for its next chapter. The ideal candidate will be committed to the strategic plan developed by the board and staff, with a proven ability to work collaboratively. The Executive Director will lead and support an innovative exhibition and public events programming schedule of the highest quality. Serving as an ambassador and key spokesperson, the Executive Director will be a visible leader in the community, representing the museum in Greenwich, the region, and beyond.

Salary Range: $350,000 -$450,000

Seaside Center Naturalist

Seasonal, full-time position.

15 weeks beginning early-June through mid September, 2025
Five days per week, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM (one-hour unpaid lunch break), Tuesday – Sunday, with flex day off. Must work weekends, Independence Day (July 4), and Labor Day (September 1).

Position and Responsibilities:

Teach on the beach out of Greenwich Point Park’s historic Innis Arden Cottage in a fun and collaborative environment this summer! Learn to seine for fish and other marine organisms, identify local species, care for the animals you catch in Seaside Center tanks, and teach the public about Long Island Sound ecology.

For over 50 years, the Bruce Museum’s Seaside Center has brought marine and environmental education to local families, and Summer Naturalists are a vital part of this beloved public institution. Educational activities developed in previous years include arts and crafts, science experiments, nature walks, and games. Interested naturalists are encouraged to develop and implement their own educational programs over the summer as well.

To provide content for families learning from home, summer naturalists write brief articles for the Bruce Museum blog, and provide content for Seaside Center social media accounts. Naturalists are given freedom to choose subject matter, and provided guidance as necessary.

This position requires a high degree of independence, comfort in working with the public and groups of all ages, and the flexibility to adapt to changing pandemic recommendations.

  • Oversees the operation of the Seaside Center as part of a two-person team.
  • Leads daily family education activities, such as crafts, nature walks, and animal exploration.
  • Supervises and instructs interns and volunteers, in cooperation with Seaside Center Manager.
  • Maintains saltwater aquaria and responsible for the care and feeding of marine life.
  • Responsible for Seaside Center Instagram account, and content for primary Bruce social media accounts.
  • Files weekly reports as well as a season-end report to the Seaside Center Manager with attendance figures, daily activities, building maintenance, etc.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Traits:

  • Ability to work with children and adults of all ages.

  • Ability to follow covid-19 safety precautions.

Recommended Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, education, museum studies, or related field.
  • Familiarity with social media, and science communication.

Special Events Manager, Full-time

The Bruce Museum, Greenwich, CT, seeks a Special Events Manager to join its team. A world-class art and science museum, the Bruce has recently celebrated the anniversary of its transformative renovation and expansion which doubled the public areas of the museum through new galleries and inventive spaces to educate, entertain, and delight. With flexible new spaces for art and science exhibitions, a new Café, 200-seat auditorium, and conference room, the Bruce offers new and expanded opportunities for all ages and interests to engage in the power of art and science.

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Special Events Manager is an integral part of the Development team and is responsible for managing and implementing all Special Events for the Bruce. The successful candidate should be a warm and effective communicator with excellent time management, organizational and collaborative skills. The ability to build relationships and steward volunteer leaders and donors in support of the Museum’s mission is important. A Special Events Manager plays a crucial role in expanding fundraising opportunities through events offered for a diverse audience and achieving strategic goals.

Key responsibilities:

Special Event Management

  • Lead coordination for all Special Events for the Museum, from concept through execution and completion. Events include the Museum’s largest benefit, the Annual Gala, Family Benefit, Art of Design, Bruce Visionary Awards, and other smaller fundraising events.
  • Management of stewardship and cultivation/donor events, including Campaign Endowment events.
  • Planning for exhibition openings and celebrations throughout the year aligned with the exhibition schedule. This includes identification and recruitment of individual and corporate sponsors and guest speakers.  (approximately four per year).
  • Develop and track each event’s budget (revenue and expenses) and timeline, with a focus on maximizing net revenue. Present consistent and timely event budgets to Chief Development Officer, and senior leadership as requested. Oversee all event details including catering, rentals, décor, security, audio visual, and volunteers.
  • Work with the Development Assistant to ensure accuracy of guest/member data.
  • Work closely with colleagues throughout the organization to effectively and efficiently manage all Special Events. Main liaison with volunteer leaders who serve as event Co-Chairs, along with event Committee members for each event.

Special Event Marketing – Promotion and Communication

  • Create copy/content for events:  pre- and post-marketing collateral for print, email and social media related to all events such as save the date, invitation, reminders, post event thank you, etc.
  • Work with Marketing team and Chief Development Officer to implement a strategic marketing plan for all events geared to diverse audiences.
  • Negotiate vendor contracts for each event. Ensure compliance with insurance, legal and safety requirements, and ensure all required event permits secured.
  • Outreach Strategies: Create and implement outreach plans to expand reach and participation in all fundraising events.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • 3+ years of high-level special fundraising events experience, preferably with a museum or non-profit with a proven record of overseeing successful events.
  • Experience working with a broad range of client/donors with excellent collaboration, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Presentation and strong communication skills required.
  • Strong time management and organization skills a must. Ability to manage under pressure of tight deadlines.
  • Ability to manage multiple large-scale projects simultaneously with the ability to adapt quickly to changing schedules
  • Familiarity with PCs, Microsoft Office & web-based communication platforms required.
  • Friendly, client-service oriented demeanor required.
  • Microsoft Office, Excel, Constant Contact, Altru/RE, or other database experience necessary, along with auction platform software.
  • Strong interest in the arts and sciences preferred.
  • 9:00 am – 5:30 pm schedule
  • Weekend/evening event work required as needed for events.

Compensation $75,000 to $85,000, commensurate with experience.

Youth and Family Intern

Introduction

Bruce Museum seeks a part-time (PT) Intern in our Youth and Family Programs to assist with delivery of educational programs to program participants.

Position Summary

The Youth and Family Intern is a part-time, paid position running from January to June, designed for current college students or recent graduates seeking to gain hands-on experience in a museum education setting. This role will assist with delivering a variety of Youth and Family programs through hands-on educational assignment such as program prep, teaching, and program development. Youth and Family programs are drop-in, intergenerational programs which focus on the intersection of art and science. Audiences might include young children (12 – 30 months) up to teens (13 – 18 years) and their caregivers. A minimum of 120 hours per semester is required with no more than 150 hours per semester. 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Prepare program materials for Youth and Family programs.
  • Create and implement materials for Family Programs associated with various exhibitions.
  • Teach Youth and Family programs, including but not limited to: Bruce Beginnings, weekend programs, and large-scale family and fundraising events.
  • Interact with visitors and children through informal educational activities and programs.
  • Develop materials and teach Bruce Beginnings and weekend programs.
    • Bruce Beginnings is a program for children (2–5 years old) and their caregivers that introduces participants to museum manners and a variety of art and science concepts in the Museum galleries.
    • Weekend programs include Family Gallery Tours, Art Adventures, and Science Solvers. Family Gallery Tours are 45-minute, educator-led tours of the Museum and its exhibitions.
    • Art Adventures and Science Solvers are rotating weekend programs that highlight different art and science concepts via the Museum's exhibitions.
    • Family Gallery Tours, Art Adventures, and Science Solvers serve intergenerational audiences, including children (5 and up) and their caregivers.
  • Learn about museum exhibitions and collections.
  • Assist with Birthday Party program preparation, set-up, and clean-up activities.
    • Birthday parties are museum-themed events for children (2-12 years old) that include an educator-led activity.
  • Work with multigenerational audiences in informal learning settings.
  • Produce and facilitate evaluation materials for select Youth and Family Programs.
  • Assist with School and Public Programs as needed.
  • Perform other related tasks as required.

Recommended skills and experience:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in art or in pursuit of a degree in art history, science, education, or related fields preferred.
  • Previous teaching experience with children and families, preferred but not required.
  • Problem solving skills and the capability to handle multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with staff in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite; experience using Google drive; experience using Adobe Acrobat Suite a plus.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Work is normally performed onsite in a museum setting, in a workshop, exhibition, etc. and/or offsite in educational spaces in schools, offices, community centers, etc.
  • Prolonged periods standing and moving throughout the teaching spaces without a break.
  • Unattended mobility required in object handling.
  • Ability to regularly move/transport and utilize teaching materials and accompanying equipment weighing from 10lbs to 25lbs each.
  • Must be able to work 20 hours a week, including Tuesdays, one weekend day, and some evenings when needed for special events like Night at the Museum.
